| Below is a
pictorial demonstrating the steps required for a pen turner at
McKinneyPens to make your one of a kind custom pen. |
After cutting the wood to size we then center the pen blanks at a drill
press. |
Once we are happy with the drill bit location we begin to drill a hole
through the blank that the pen tube will be glued into. |
| We
then take the blanks and make sure that all ends are straight so that the
pen parts will fit perfectly. |
We
then take the pen blanks and put them on the lathe. |
| The pen
chiseling process now begins. |
| |
The wood is now at the stage where we will begin sanding it down. |
Due to the fact that any foreign particles will affect the following steps
we do a thorough clean up. |
We begin our sanding with a 220 grit sandpaper
and work our way down to a 2500 grit sandpaper.
You can already see how the wood
glows! But we are not done yet! |
With the lathe off we apply a friction polish. |
Then with the lathe on we use a soft cloth to polish the wood until it
gets too hot to handle. |
This process is
done twice to ensure a beautiful handmade pen.
